A dock worker was killed, and another was injured when a tire on a heavy piece of equipment “blew up” at the Port of Los Angeles. The tire that blew was on a large loader that’s used to move shipping containers around the terminal when two workers were inflating the top-handler tire, which is about 5 to 6 feet in diameter when it exploded.
Risk assessment of maintenance works should be examined and revised if tire explosion hazards were not predicted.
Tire cage should be constructed and used to prevent against hazards of a tire explosion. Strength of the cage should be designed considering the maximum force of the biggest tire pressure.
Air pressure of tires should be understood by maintenance workers to inflate the tires properly. Tire pressures scale should be prepared and kept ready to use by workers.
