Danish multinational power company Ørsted, formerly known as DONG Energy, has singed a letter of intent with the ocean carrier Maersk to work together and produce large quantities of ‘green’ fuel for the shipping line’s upcoming fleet of twelve methanol-powered 16,000 teu vessels.

Ørsted intends to build a so-called ‘power-to-X-facility on the US GulfvCoast. The company said it will develop a 675 MW plant that will produce approximately 300,000 tonnes of e-methanol per year.

The facility will be powered by approx. 1.2 GW of renewable energy from new onshore wind and solar photovoltaic farms. The biogenic carbon needed to produce e-methanol will be extracted through carbon capture at one or more large point sources.

According to Ørsted, the project is due to be commissioned in the second half of 2025.

It is recalled that Maersk had placed an initial order for eight methanol- MDO dual fuel container ships with Hyundai Heavy Industries in August 2021.

Scheduled to be delivered through 2024, the ships will be the world’s first mainliners with dual fuel MDO and methanol propulsion. Maersk will pay just under USD 177 M for each of the eight new ships.

Earlier this year in January, Maersk then ordered another four ships of the same design from the same yard. Thanks to a weakening Korean Won against the US Dollar, Maersk only paid USD 175 M for each of the additional four units.

Already in mid-2023, Maersk will receive a one-off 2,100 teu methanol ship, designed for the intra-European trades.
