China has constructed the first test base for unmanned ships, which will start operations at the end of this year. The test base named Xiangshan Marine Scientific & Technological Port is located in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province.
According to Xinhua news agency, the test base will establish an innovation platform for the design, research, and testing of unmanned marine systems and intelligent equipment.
It will also help build the industrial chain of unmanned ships and adopt research on advanced equipment manufacturing, along with a new generation of information technology.
The base will take up an area of 32,000 square meters, and will include laboratories, test pools, a docking berth and sea trial area.
Finally, being a collective innovation platform in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Great Bay Area, the base aims to advance the development of the marine economy in the region.
