Spain’s Ministry of Public Works and Transport has delayed the deadline for an agreement on national port reforms by six months after key meetings with unions and Puertos del Estado to discuss new collective bargaining agreements
This represents an about face on the part of the government, which had resisted any delay in making a decision, despite requests from the unions for a year-long extension. The decision was forced on the government by the threat of further strikes.
The additional six months begins when the new legislation covering the sector is approved. This should be ready at the end of July, putting any decision on the future of stevedoring back to late 2018 or early 2019.
Coordinadora has therefore decided not to go through with threatened strikes, at least in the short term.
