The president of Las Palmas port, Luis Ibarra, signed a few days ago in Brazil an agreement with grain operators which will export 6 million tonnes of grain through the Spanish harbour.
Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply confirmed that "this is the result of two years of work."
From the outset, 25,000 tonnes of soybeans from Brazil are coming to Las Palmas. From Brazil, the search for a port has been accelerated with the purpose of re-exporting the grain to ports in the Eurozone.
That Brazilian cargo, when it leaves the Canary Islands, will go to Morocco. Therefore, it will be possible to triangulate between the Port of Acu, in Rio de Janeiro, to European and African ports, using the port of Las Palmas as a storage base. The preliminary work was carried out by officials headed by the number two of the Ministry of Agriculture of Brazil, Eumar Novacki, on a mission to Spain in October 2017.
