The construction of the 94-kilometer railway line that will connect Évora, in Portugal's Alentejo region, to Elvas, on the border with Spain, was inaugurated in Portugal.
The new line, as Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa explained, will be the most important railway project in Portugal in the last 100 years and will integrate a railway corridor that begins in Lisbon, Setúbal and Sines and reaches Badajoz, a small Spanish town near the border.
The construction of the new railway line, which will be dedicated above all to the transport of cargo, will involve an investment of €509 million ($629.3 million), of which €277 million ($342.47 million) of government and €232 million ($286.83 million) of EU funds and, according to forecasts, will be completed in 2022.
The new tracks will make it possible to connect the Portuguese ports of Lisbon, Setubal and Sines to the Spanish market and the rest of the European continent.
