Over 87% of the fleet capacity of the 67 largest global container transport companies is controlled by the first ten of them, which account for just under 7% of them, UK consulting firm MDS Transmodal said.
At the top of the "Top 10" list is now Maersk Line. After the acquisition of Hamburg Süd in December 2017, it surpassed the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), its "partner" in the 2M Alliance, with a 21% share of the global market. On the second place is MSC, followed by CMA CGM. The remaining seven places in the ranking are as follows: Hapag-Lloyd, COSCO, Evergreen, OOCL, MOL, Yang Ming and NYK.
In the last four years, the first ten carriers have seen their market share increase from 68% to 83%, going from around 55 million to 86.7 million TEUs. Only four years ago, before Maersk Line and MSC formed the 2M Alliance, starting the wave of consolidations, mergers and acquisitions that involved the main players in shipping, the market shares were more evenly distributed.
