Cádiz port authority (Autoridad Portuaria Bahía de Cádiz) president José Luis Blanco has said the underground access to its new container terminal, still under construction, has been flooded.
The amount of water accumulated on the excavated surface is reminiscent of an Olympic pool, as a graphic image illustrates. The port authority has commissioned a study to the Center for Studies and Experimentation of Public Works (Cedex) on the causes of the flooding.

The flooding can slow the completion of the construction works by between 18 and 24 months. Therefore, the port authority has agreed on the potential access to the container terminal through the land owned by shipbuilder Navantia, in case the facility is opened before the tunnel is constructed.

It should be noted that the construction of the tunnel was already paralyzed for some months by the appearance of a huge sheet at a great depth that prevented the continuation of the execution of the work.
According to the first analysis commissioned by the port authority, the origin of the flood may be a defect in the execution of the screens that make up the tunnel. The port authority is already drafting the project to seal the leaks detected on the screens, so, once this problem is solved, it will undertake a drainage of the tunnel and, finally, will be able to evaluate the situation.
